Western astrology relies heavily on Sun and Moon signs.  Your Sun sign is determined by the position of the sun in the Zodiac at the moment of your birth, and your Moon sign by the position that the moon occupied when you were born.

You have to imagine the Zodiac as a huge ring out in space enclosing hundreds of stars and planets.  The picture above shows only the sun, Earth and its moon, but if you were standing on Earth looking at the sun, you would say that the Sun pictured here was 'in' Pisces.  Depending on exactly where you were standing, you might also say that the Moon was 'in' Aries. As the Earth moves around the Sun, so the sun's position in the Zodiac changes just as the moon's position in the Zodiac alters as it circumvents the Earth.  Someone born with the sun and moon positioned as in the picture would have a Sun sign of Pisces, and a Moon sign of Aries.

Everyone's character is a balance between their 'Sun sign' and their 'Moon sign'.  It is of course entirely possible that the Sun and Moon could both be 'in' the same Zodiac sign at the moment of someone's birth, and hence their Sun and Moon signs would have the same name, giving that person enhanced characteristics of only one sign.

Good solid relationships require that the couple enjoy both compatible 'Sun signs' and compatible 'Moon signs'.  Ignore your Moon sign balance at your peril!
